Rome Alphabets

Since arriving in Rome last September I have been working on the design of 10 alphabets. Each of the alphabets draws inspiration, in varying degrees, from an inscription in the city of Rome. Below are samples of 7 of the alphabets paired with photographs of the inscriptions that inspired them.

An inscription in the portico of S Maria in Trastevere and the type inspired by it

An inscription in S Agnese fuori le mura and the type inspired by it

An inscription in the Museo Capitoline and the type inspired by it

An inscription in the cortile of the American Academy in Rome and the type inspired by it

The inscription on the Temple of Saturn and the type inspired by it

The inscription on the Baker's tomb and the type inspired by it

An inscription in the portico of S Maria in Trastevere and the type inspired by it
